Despite rain, Kashmir highway through | Leh, Mughal, Gurez roads remain closed | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 17: Despite fresh rain since early this morning, the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was through for traffic with some restrictions while the highway connecting the Ladakh region with Kashmir remained closed since December last year. Meanwhile, the historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region besides Bandipora-Gurez also remained closed for the past five months. A traffic police official said here that traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway was through despite rain at several places.Passenger vehicles will ply from both sides daily while heavy vehicles will operate on alternative days from Kashmir and Jammu, he said.He said today heavy vehicles will ply from Srinagar to Jammu and no heavy vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction keeping in view the condition of road stretch between Batote and Banihal. However, the passenger vehicles will ply from both sides. The width of the road formation has shrunk due to sliding, particularly at Mandir point Patnitop, Kiker More Batote, Nashri, Dilwas, Peera and Wagan Ramso where only one way movement of traffic is possible He said movement of all types of Jammu bound passenger vehicles shall be permitted from Qazigund from 0500 hrs to 1500 hrs whereas movement of load carriers shall be permitted from 0600 hrs to 1300 hrs only. Meanwhile, the District Development Commissioner Shopian G M Dar along with the team of Mughal Road Division, Mechanical Engineering Officers, Police and Traffic Officials yesterday inspected the road up to Pir Ki Gali. During the inspection, the DC was informed by the Chief Planning Officer (CPO) Shopian that historic Mughal road will be thrown open after the road is completely cleared of landslide debris. However, fresh rain since early this morning has affected the road opening operation.During the inspection, it was unanimously decided not to allow any vehicle to ply on the Mughal road till it is cleared completely as major landslide had occurred near Lalghulam Bridge along the 84-km long road, being seen as alternative to Srinagar-Jammu national highway. Snow clearance operation by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) responsible for the maintenance of the highway was going on a war footing on the road connecting the Ladakh region with Kashmir. The BRO had earlier announced to put through the highway a month earlier following less snowfall during the winter. However, late snowfall in March has delayed reopening of the highway, closed since December last year. The Centre has already approved a tunnel at Zojila pass to make it an all weather road. Sources said it will take few more weeks to clear the snow and repair the road before allowing traffic on the highway. Sources said road from Bandipora to Gurez on the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir and Synthan to Kishtwar also remained closed since December last year.
