Ordered to be wound up by present regime Overseas Employment Corporation, white elephant created by NC-Congress Govt | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Apr 26: Previous National Conference-Congress coalition government in the state took many 'hasty' and 'wrong' decisions which at the end of the day did not lead to any benefit to any person in the state and in fact put un-necessary burden on the state ex-chequer. Creation of Jammu & Kashmir Overseas Employment Corporation (JKOEC) was one of the few wrong decisions taken by the dispensation led by Omar Abdullah. Ever since its creation the Corporation failed to get even a single un-employed youth adjusted in any company or other organization located abroad or within the country. The JKOEC was established in 2010 to facilitate employment of unemployed youth within and outside the country. The Corporation was incorporated under Companies Act, 1956 with its registered office at Karan Nagar, Srinagar. It was registered with the Protector General of Emigrants, Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (Government of India) as recruiting agent. The then state government announced with authority that the creation of this Corporation would go a long way in tackling the unemployment problem in Jammu & Kashmir. However, six years down the line no success whatsoever was achieved with nobody getting appointed both within the country and outside the country. It was due to this reason that Finance Minister Haseeb Drabu who is also the Minister for Employment ordered for the winding up of Jammu & Kashmir Overseas Employment Corporation. The minister noted that only salary to the officials was given to the employees of the Corporation over the past six years with the objectives for which the same was created not met. Sources told Early Times that thousands of unemployed youth had got registered with JKOEC with the hope that they would get a decent job either within the country or outside. However, the Corporation failed to come up to the expectations of the unemployed youth and its creation turned out to be a flop show. "Hundreds of professionals like doctors, engineers and advocates got themselves enrolled with the JKOEC hoping that they would get a job in their respective sectors preferably outside the country given the fact that there is better pay packet in foreign countries. Most of these people had to take up menial jobs since their hopes got dashed due to the ineffective functioning of Jammu & Kashmir Overseas Employment Corporation," said sources. Sources said that Corporation officials failed to tie up with the companies located both within the country and outside the country in a professional manner. They said that this turned up as one of the major reasons that the registered unemployed youth could not get any job either within the country or outside the country. "Most of the youth who had got registered with JKOEC have lost hope with the system since no headway whatsoever was made with regard to their employment through the Corporation. These people are disillusioned and believe that their precious time has got wasted since they registered with the JKOEC for the job either within the country or outside the country," said sources. |
