SMC to undertake door to door collection of garbage | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, May 27: After remaining in controversy over allotment of Waste to Energy project , the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is now planning to undertake solid waste management (SWM) in some selected wards of Srinagar city on a pilot basis. According to sources a high level meeting took place between SMC and management of a Hyderabad based company which is doing door to door collection and segregation of solid waste in Indore , Bhopal and many cities across Madhya Pradesh and some other states of India. SMC is planning to allot 5 wards to the company on pilot basis who would work in coordination with SMC filed staff for collecting garbage from each household and doing its segregation from the doorsteps. Earlier a Delhi based NGO was asked to undertake solid waste management in Srinagar city last year by Governor administration , but the said organization didn't undertake the door to door collection of garbage and instead worked with rag-pickers which hasn't shown any positive results say the sources . Pertinent to mention that during January and February months the SMC spent a huge amount on awareness campaign in local print and electronic media. The documents reveal that advertisements were given to many unimportant news papers as well whose circulation is not more than 500 prints on daily basis. " I am not against awareness campaign through print and electronic media , but first SMC must give priority to door to door collection of garbage and its segregation. Not a single penny is being spent on these types of activities. I am shocked to see that good amount of money has been paid to some newspapers whose circulation does not cross more than 500 prints daily and people hardly have heard names of such newspapers. Now the newly appointed Commissioner SMC is planning to go ahead with door to door collection of garbage in city and if this is done that has to be appreciated " said one Mohammad Afzal Mir of Chanapora Srinagar. "Segregation of biodegradable and non bio degradable items is the best option before municipal authorities to manage the solid waste and all the environmental experts lay emphasis on it . The SMC was hardly interested in undertaking this type of work and was busy in inviting big companies. SMC and other municipal authorities need to segregate bio-degradable and non biodegradable waste material at source and door to door collection is the only viable option says Dr Fayaz Ahmad who teaches Environmental Science in Higher Education Department. SMC has been previously caught in another similar controversy wherein the valley's top most missionary school located in Srinagar's posh Rajbagh area was found to be involved in an holy nexus and corruption in league with the employees of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) from the last many years. The presentation convent school according to official documents from SMC has not at all paid sanitation fees towards the SMC, but on the other hand SMC lifts huge amount of garbage from Presentation Convent School on daily basis . An RTI query in this case had revealed that SMC officials were not charging any monthly sanitation fees from the Presentation Convent School management for lifting the huge garbage which gets accumulated in the school premises. This illegal activity had continued for many years. |
