SHO takes 'bribe' to free heroin smugglers, book rivals | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 27: A police officer, who is SHO of a police station falling under the administrative control of the district headquarter here, is alleged to have taken a huge money as bribe to free heroin smugglers and wrongly book their rivals. The police station doesn't fall in the border area of the district. Several drug smugglers are said to be active in this area. Acting on a tip-off about the presence of some heroin smugglers in a shop under his jurisdiction, the SHO raided the premises and apprehended three of them. Some quantity of heroin and an equipment used to weigh the contraband were also seized, according to police sources. All of them were shifted to the police station and put to questioning during which they disclosed to police the names of their other accomplices. In the raids that followed, police picked up from the area at least a dozen of other drug dealers. "But the SHO did not register a case against any of them. He charged a bribe of Rs 20,000 to 30,000 from each of them and freed all of them. This way he made over Rs 2 lakh," sources alleged. However, after the news of SHO having joined hands with the drug mafia spread in the area, he acted fast and this time picked up three other heroin smugglers who were rivals of the gang released by him, sources alleged, saying they were arrested at the instance of those freed. While they were apprehended from different areas, the SHO later wrongly claimed that all of them had been apprehended by cops at a naka. |
