With twitter king busy, top leaders distraught due to shrinking space | Irrelevant in changing scenario, NC takes to dharna politics now | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 3: In a changing political scenario when national level opposition parties clamouring for restoration of peace and normalcy in Kashmir, National Conference is finding itself getting irrelevant with its political space shrinking fast and no one paying attention to what the leaders contend. Its working President Omar Abdullah sarcastically labelled as Twitter king is busy in 'business as usual' whereas the 'distraught' top leaders in second line are taking to roads to keep themselves relevant in the scenario. From fiery Ali Mohammad Sagar to aggressive Akbar Lone, and Sharif u Din Shariq, Choudhary Ramzan, Nasir Wani, Mubarak Gul and others down the hierarchy of seniority all Kashmir based leaders converged outside Civil Secretariat on Thursday to stage dharna against the government, albeit on a flawed note. All the leaders who remained silent for initial phase of unrest and mute spectators to the growing violence became active lately, with Omar leaning largely towards New Delhi. The irony is that NC leadership which did not bother to contact any 'pertinent' quarter in Valley for over 50 days, has now claimed the party leaders can sacrifice their lives for the cause of people. The loud sloganeering by the NC leaders also looked somewhat out of context and irrelevant as they were seen voicing concern over use of pellet guns in a scenario when it has become official these will be replaced by alternatives. Most of the senior leaders were seen on the forefront of the protests against 'civilian killings and so called excesses' by security forces, demanding end to both. While it was almost rank and file of the party's top leadership and functionaries down the line who made their 'aggressive' presence on the road, Farooq Abdullah's and Omar Abdullah's absence was conspicuous. He continued to remain busy on the twitter attacking the PDP led government. Even though all other senior leaders took to streets and assembled for some time on dharna site, their protest did not make much impact on any quarter. Even the media ignored it and pushed the news to inside pages. There are reasons as to why this protest went almost ignored in all circles. One that NC's leadership arose to this kind of protest too late when things and situation has almost subsided. The protest and dharna is seen on a flawed line also for the reason that Omar Abdullah instead of playing a positive role of opposition leader during unrest period inclined towards New Delhi for what he sought a 'automated' resolution to Kashmir issue from no less a dignitary than the President of the country. At a time when he and his party leaders should have taken the initiative in Kashmir valley itself or met the civil society and other quarters that matter, he inclined towards New Delhi with his 'much publicised opposition initiative' campaign. |
