Minister's ultimatum goes in vain | Clearing encroachments from Govt land | | Early Times Report Rajauri, Oct 13: Despite the 5-day ultimatum given by Revenue Minister Syed Basharat Bukhari to Sunderbani administration to get rid of encroachments from government land near Tehsil office, the officials have not even bothered to visit the site not to talk of evicting the illegal occupants. Sources said "land mafia" has been so active in the region that it has occupied around 50 kanals of prized land adjacent to the Tehsil office here. Sources said failing to get rid of the encroachments, the local inhabitants knocked the door of Revenue Minister Basharat Bukhari, during his recent visit to Jammu province. Sources said the delegation comprising respectable from the area informed the minister about the large-scale activities of the land mafia, which has become so powerful that it has grabbed government land right under the nose of the Tehsil office Sunderbani where most of the senior officials operate from. Sources said the minister at once called a senior official in the civil administration asking him to free the government land without any excuse. But even though the deadline is over, results are awaited. Sources in the Tehsil office said the concerned didn't even serve any notice to the illegal occupiers of the land who happen to running their business units from the said land. "At first the officials thought to visit the illegally occupied site and ask the encroachers to vacate it but subsequently the officials resolved that it was better to hush up the matter for personal gains," the insiders said. Sources said apart from seeking bribe from the illegal occupants of the land, the officials got phone calls from some politicians from ruling coalition not to act on the directives of the minister and that they would personally resolve the matter with him. "Amid the pulls and pressures," insiders said, "the administration decided not to initiate any action against land grabbers." The area residents on the other hand are up in arms. "If Tehsil land can be grabbed then anything can be grabbed," residents said. They said their visit to the concerned minister proved a waste of money and time spent in travel to Jammu. "If the minister cannot help us than who can help government where its own land is grabbed?" the residents asked. They appealed chief minister Mehbooba Mufti to personally look into the matter. Despite repeated attempts, the minister could not be contacted for comments. |
