Apprehending ouster from Cabinet, PDP minister plays Hurriyat card | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 13: Apprehending his ouster from the state Cabinet for "immaturely handling" situation in restive Kashmir, a minister from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) has started lobbying with Hurriyat leadership to salvage his chair in the government. Sources said Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, who is also the PDP President, received inputs from her party colleagues and other reliable quarters that one of the ministers had been damaging the government becausr of his inexperience in tackling the prevalent crises in Kashmir. Sources said from "unduly poking his nose in all official meetings to issuing statements and to his undue interference in policing", the minister, who happens to be a former bureaucrat, tried everything to show off before the CM that he is "most capable." "But every attempt of his has boomeranged… His efforts proved more damaging than benefitting anybody . Even schoolchildren have turned against us," said a senior PDP leader, pleading anonymity. Sources said the party high command was informed that the minister has proved "the most-hated personality" in the government and that his provocative statements damaged reputation of the entire government thereby hindering efforts for restoration of peace and prosperity in the restive Valley, on the boil since July 8 when militant commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani and his two colleagues were killed. Sources said the party leadership resolved that it was better to sideline the "amateur minister" than to cause miscarriage of the coalition through his immature moves." "It was decided that the minister would be ousted in the cabinet reshuffle," said an insider privy to the development. But the plan somehow leaked to the minister and he played a new card, trying to appease Hurriyat and to boast before the government his relationship with the separatists. Sources said he at once called an official function here, to deliberately send a signal to media that he has a soft corner for the Hurriyat. "He deliberately termed himself a most hated politician but attributed it to the so called bitter truth he speaks in the interest of the society," said a source privy to the development. He simultaneously started appreciating senior separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani and even asked the government officials to read Wular Kay Kinaray, the biography of the pro Pakistan hawk, who is seen as the mastermind, behind the prevalent unrest. Insiders said his game plan was to get into the good books of the Hurriyat, something which could again boast his position in the PDP. "He is pretending before the government that he is vital for their survival and that he alone can persuade Hurriyat for a deal over resumption of normalcy," the insiders said. Sources said apart from approaching Geelani's family through some middle-rung government officials, the minister has been in constant touch with some civil society activists, mainly from higher education department, asking them to act as his messenger with Geelani. Sources said intelligence agencies are keeping track of his "abnormal behaviour" and have informed the government about the same. Despite repeated attempts the minister could not be contacted for comments. |
