Choona lagana: Lease expired in 2007, but JKCL continues to extract limestone | | | Arun Singh
Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 13: Even as the lease deed for extraction of limestone expired around nine years ago, the J&K Cements Limited (JKCL) continues to extract the mineral in violation of norms and causing huge loss to the revenue of the Geology and Mining Department. Sources told Early Times that the JKCL had got huge chunk of land measuring over 80 hectares for extraction of limestone on lease for 20 years. The lease expired in 2007 but the company instead of going for renewal of the lease continues to extract limestone. Besides overlooking the rules in renewal of lease deed, the company also showed poor performance in extraction of the mineral. Moreover, the initiative taken by the Company in 2009 to explore possibility of outsourcing mining activities has not been finalized till date. "The extraction and transportation of limestone was carried out by the JKCL through its mining wing. Against installed capacity for extraction of limestone of 4 lakh metric ton (MTs), the capacity utilization was 38% during 2010-11 which increased to 54% during 2011-12 and thereafter decreased to 48% during 2012-13 and further to 33% during 2014-15," sources said. They alleged that the company carried out extraction of the mineral as per requirement of the plant. Although the matter of lease is lying with Director Geology and Mining, due to apathy of JKCL the renewal of expired deed is hanging in balance. Pertinently, the government had allotted a land measuring 88 hectares on lease for 20 years for extraction of limestone to JKCL in 1977. Having 12 million tonnes (proved) and 5.75 million tonnes (probable) reserve of limestone, the Company extracted only 5 million tonnes of limestone till 2014. |
