Ahead of winter, taps go dry in Kashmir | | | Muhammad Mukaram

Srinagar, Oct 24: As the winter session is round the corner , the residents of various areas of the Valley especially those in Srinagar are facing acute shortage of drinking water. Many people living in various southern areas of the Srinagar city which get the supply from the Doodh Ganga plant have been facing intense shortage of water. "Our area is without tap water for the last seven days. We repeatedly brought it into the notice of the concerned officials but nobody is paying heed to our pleas," a resident of Azad Basti, Pamposh Colony Natipora said. "We are forced to consume the contaminated water that is being fetched from contaminated sources from other areas amid restrictions," he said. The residents of Humhama also complained that there was an acute shortage of potable water. "Our women folk have to fetch water from a long distance. We have approached the concerned officials many a times, but our pleas have fallen on deaf ears," a local resident Ghulam Mohammad said. The residents of old city Srinagar also complained of the scarcity of drinking water in the area. The residents of Safa Kadal said they rarely get tap water during the day. "I brought water bottles from a local shopkeeper during the relaxation hours last week which we have been consuming for the last many days," said Mohammad Ashraf, a local. Residents of Barbar Shah also complained of water shortage. "We are facing a tough time due to water shortage. It is first time on any festival when there is so much of water shortage. We request the authorities to make adequate supply of drinking water on Eid," said a group of aggrieved residents from these areas. Similar complaints are pouring in from various parts of south and north Kashmir where people said they are forced to fetch water from streams and consume contaminated water. According to the official of PHE, "There is some work going on in Doodh Ganga. But the water problem will be solved at the earliest and we don't want people to suffer any more for want of drinking water," he assured. As per official data, the total water requirement of Kashmir is around 12 crore gallons per day, which includes seven crore gallons in the urban areas and five crore in rural areas.
