Sports Council allocates grounds to political party, forgoes fee | Why a separate set of rules for BJP? | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 24: It was heartening to see sports events being organized to commemorate the birth anniversary of party stalwart Pandit Prem Nath Dogra, but Sports Council stirred a controversy by allocating its sports infrastructure to the political party free of cost in departure from laid norms. According to the norms, Sports Council allocates its sports infrastructure to recognized and affiliated sports associations for the conduct of its championships and allocations to all other social, political organizations is made against requisite cost which has been fixed by the authorized committee of the council and the payment is made to the council through proper Government receipt (GR), but sources in the council divulged that while the BJP organized events in Judo, basketball and football, no fee was charged from the party. "No fee has been charged as far as I know as the GR remains with the Sports officer Jammu and the allocation of the grounds is done by the joint secretary" said an officer of the Council pleading anonymity. Besides extending freebies to the political party, it was interesting to note how sports council repaired the Judo hall in the indoor complex of the MA stadium within a day, which was locked for want of repairs and the Judoks were robbed of their training centre for months. "We pleaded for repairs of our centre to the concerned officers, but rather than taking up the repairs on priority, they locked our hall and we had no place to train" said a player. It is pertinent to mention here that the Sports Council has several times in the past landed in legal hassles due to lack of transparency in allocation of sports infrastructure including Dussehra ground at Apsara Road Gandhi nagar. |
