After SC's ruling on BCCI, JK politicians find themselves on sticky wicket | | | Saqib Ahmad Early Times Report srinagar, Oct 24: The recent judgement by the Supreme Court asking Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to comply with the recommendations Justice R.M. Lodha Committee has unnerved some politicians in J&K who have had treated the J&K Cricket Association (JKCA) as their fiefdom. The apex court on last Friday refused to give any concession to the BCCI and ordered that none of the Board's member State associations will get a single rupee from the apex cricket body till they comply in "letter and spirit" with the Justice R.M. Lodha Committee reforms. The apex court also directed BCCI president Anurag Thakur and secretary Ajay Shirke to give an undertaking on affidavit before the Lodha panel and in the court by December 3 stating how much time they would need to implement the reforms. In J&K, the judgement has put the politicians like National Conference president and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, PDP leader and Sports Minister Imran Ansari and others in a tight spot. Farooq Abdullah has been the longest president of the JKCA. Abdullah was president of the sports body between 1980 and 2015 when he was replaced by Ansari last year. Since then both the leaders have been fighting over its presidency and have taken legal recourse as well. It was first time since 1980 that Abdullah was voted out in JKCA elections. The NC president is facing charges of swindling funds received from the BCCI. A multi-crore scam surfaced in JKCA in 2012. Buckling under pressure, Abdullah constituted an in-house committee in 2012 which comprised of Muhammad Ashraf Bhat, Arvinder Singh Micky, Ashwinder Koul and Sham Kalsutra while as Manzoor Wazir was its coordinator. A report was submitted in the same year. However, after submitting the report two members of the committee had resigned. The in-house probe report had indicted former JKCA chairman Muhammad Aslam Goni, former treasurer Ahsan Mirza and Saleem Khan, who had been a member of the Association, for their role in the scam. Now the SC judgement has also unnerved Ansari as he too could be ousted as per the Lodha recommendations. The JKCA is struggling to meet its financial expenses for running cricketing activities as JK Ranji players await match fees of 2014-2015 Ranji season, and cricketing activities have almost been halted due to non-release of funds by the BCCI since 2011. "The JKCA funds of Rs 150 crore have been stopped since 2011 by the BCCI after the scam surfaced in the association. Most of the cricketing activities have been halted due to lack of funds. Last year, the BCCI released some funds for running of national activities," an official said. He said unlike the other state cricket associations, the JKCA had no reserve funds to run its cricketing activities. |
