srinagar, Oct 24: The summer capital, Srinagar, recorded the lowest minimum temperature of the season so far after the mercury witnessed a drop and settled at 3.2 degrees Celsius due to cold breeze during the night. However, despite cold winds, the Sun is providing much needed relief to people during the day in the Kashmir Valley, where world famous health resort of Pahalgam recorded the coldest night of the season at 1.5 degrees. The Sun appeared this morning but the cold winds also continued, forcing people to wear warm and woollen clothes. In the mountainous areas and outskirts, people could be seen in “Pheran” using “Kangri besides other electric gadgets, forcing Power Development Department (PDD) to go for power curtailment, even in metered areas also. A Met department spokesman said the sky would become generally cloudy as the day progresses with the possibility of isolated rain. He said due to cold breeze, the minimum temperature witnessed a drop and settled at 3.2 degrees, lowest of the season so far. It was also a notch below normal in Srinagar, where the civil secretariat, seat of the government, including the office of Chief Minister and her cabinet colleague is closing on October 27 to reopen in winter capital, Jammu on November 7. However, despite cold winds, the maximum temperature yesterday was 22.8 degrees, about two notches above normal in the city. Due to strike, called by separatists, majority people remained indoor in the valley, including Srinagar. Students also remained confined to their homes as the educational institutions were also not functioning. |
