26 hours long Karan Nagar encounter ends with death of two militants | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Feb 13: The 26 hours long encounter between militants and security forces at Karan Nagar here ended in the afternoon today with the death of two holed up militants. The slain militants belonged to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and some arms as well as ammunition were recovered from their possession. The encounter had started in the morning of February 12 (Monday) and culminated today in the afternoon. Police and security agencies are trying to ascertain the identity of the two militants. Some of the reports suggested that they were residents of Arwani-Kulgam, but these could not be confirmed. During the intervening night of February 12 and 13 loud bangs were heard by the residents of Karan Nagar and adjoining areas. The security forces carried out the final assault this morning and the two militants got killed within a span of couple of hours. The militants had taken refuge in an under construction building after their attempt to enter the headquarters of 23rd battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was foiled by the sentry posted at the gate of battalion headquarters. The under construction building suffered extensive damages after it was hit by mortar shells. Addressing a press conference here, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir range, Swayam Prakash Pani said that incriminating material recovered from the possession of slain militants suggested that they belonged to LeT. The IGP said that a CRPF jawan Mujahid Khan was killed in the attack adding that a policeman who sustained injuries is stated to be out of danger. "The militants tried their best to sneak into the headquarters of 23rd battalion of CRPF, but their attempt was foiled. We were able to neutralize both the militants following which the encounter ended. They were cadres of Lashkar-e-Toiba and same got proved from the incriminating material received from their possession," said Pani. A police spokesman said that on 12-02-2018 early in the morning at 4:30 am, one alert CRPF sentry of 23 Bn. HQ Karan Nagar spotted two militants carrying pithu bags and armed with AK-47 rifles. The alert sentry opened fire due to which terrorists fled towards the nearby locality. "At 1000 hours during conduct of search operation in the area near Gole Market Karan Nagar J/D of P/S Karan Nagar the search party was fired upon by these militants who were hiding in an under construction multi-storied building ensuing an encounter. The encounter concluded today afternoon. In the encounter two terrorists were killed whose identity is being ascertained. Both these terrorists belonged to LeT outfit as per the incriminating material recovered from them," said the police spokesman. The police spokesman said that during the encounter one CRPF personnel identified as Ct. Mohammad Mujahid Khan S/o Abdul Khair Khan R/o District Arah State Bihar of 49 Bn CRPF attained martyrdom and one J&K police personnel namely Javid Ahmad of District Police Srinagar suffered bullet injuries but his condition is stable. "Two AK-47 rifles, eight AK-47 magazines and other war like stores were recovered from the encounter site. While planning the operation due care was taken to avoid any collateral damage. Police has registered a case and investigation is on," said the police spokesman. |
