Sundarbani farmers Imparted Skills on Bio intensive Farming

Sunderbani, Mar 6: About fifty five farmers were exposed to this kind of farming at Sundarbani by the scientific experts from Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu under Department of Biotechnology (DBT) Govt. of India sponsored project.
The farmers were firstly introduced to the benefits of this farming as it doesn't require much investment and technology but Produces high yields from less land and water. Due to the available green biomass in vicinity of their field, the local farmers were imparted skills to achieve optimal soil conditions by performing the so-called double digging to allow easier exchange of nutrients, air and water with plant roots, followed by composting of the biomass and adding it to their farms to sustain the fertility of the soil.
The forenoon session were conducted on practical skills being demonstrated to farmers on use vermin-compost, green manuring and balanced use of nutrients to improve the soil health as well. In the afternoon session they were demonstrated on bio prospecting of local plants and organisms as biological products including bio pesticides and Bio-rationales.
On field practical skills were also imparted to farmers on how to make plant origin pesticides from local plants use such as Timbru (Zanthoxylum), Neem Seed Kernal Extract (NSKE), and Pongamia seed etc. The use of egg parasoitoid Trichogramma for managing tomato fruit borer was also demonstrated in field.
Progressive farmers of the area shared their experience on traditional pesticides and practices of pest management and appealed the fellow farmers to use bio pesticides and bio-agents for pesticide free crop production in the area and emphasized the need for such demonstration programmes for the benefit of the farming community. The farmers were also provided minikits for testing the outcome of the use of bio pesticides and technical literature.
