Early Times Report

Budgam, Ma 6: At a time when the whole country is focusing on sanitation and preservation of water bodies, the Housing & Urban Development Department (HUDD) and the Directorate of Urban Local Bodies in Kashmir / Jammu seem to be least bothered about health and hygiene of citizens. The Municipal Committees under HUDD and ULB's continue to dump all the municipal trash and garbage in water bodies across the state. From last 10 years since Chadoora town in Budgam district got Municipal Committee, the Directorate of ULB and District Administration instead of identifying a scientific landfill site are dumping all the municipal waste in Doodh Ganga nallah which is not only a drinking water supply source for Chadoora and Srinagar but is considered to be very sacred by both Muslims and Hindus.
Details available with Early Times reveal that local municipality in Chadoora town of central Kashmir's Budgam district which is represented by two senior cabinet Ministers are seen involved in dumping all the garbage into the Doodh-Ganga nallah which flows through this town. Irony is that same water is supplied by Public Health Engineering (PHE) department to thousands of people in Budgam and parts of Srinagar.
In absence of any scientific landfill site the Municipal Committee Chadoora disposes off hundreds of kilograms garbage into Doodh Ganga Nallah every day. This detested activity is going on since last several years. The safai karamcharis working with Chadoora municipality collect all the garbage from various areas of Chadoora town and same is dumped during night time or in the early morning hours in the Doodg-Ganga nallah which is fresh water stream flowing through this area.
As reported already Municipal Council Udhampur also dumps solid waste in an open place on Jammu Srinagar National Highway on the banks of Tawi river.
Sources in Health Department have revealed that patients suffering from intestinal and other similar diseases is on rise in Udhampur and adjoining areas due to intake of polluted water which is supplied by PHE. Same is the case with Chadoora town sources said. Sources have told Early Times that Municipal Committee Beerwah is also involved in similar unholy practice. The municipal waste collected in the town is dumped in nallah Sukh Naag. The locals have criticized the Pollution Control Board for its silence.
