Militants target unarmed policemen, their families, political workers | For creating scare | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Mar 31: Militants have started targeting unarmed policemen , their families and political workers to scare them. It has been observed that militants attack policemen they are off duty. It according to sources is to pressure police not to participate in anti-militancy operations. On Saturday, militants shot dead a special police officer near Murran Chowk in south Kashmir's Pulwama district. Mohammad Ashraf was a former militant who was now posted in Srinagar as a police officer. Ashraf suffered serious bullet injuries and was shifted to a nearby hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries. He was not wearing uniform. Earlier on Saturday, militants had fired at another SPO, Trilok Singh in Khanabal area of Anantnag. Singh was shifted to hospital for treatment. Another SPO had been shot dead by militants in Anantnag district on Thursday. According to a police officer, a group of militants entered the house of Mushtaq Ahmed Sheikh in Bijbehara area of Anantnag in the evening and opened fire at him. While Sheikh was killed on the spot, his wife was critically injured. A police official said that it was a fresh strategy from militants to target unarmed policemen. "It is to create fear among policemen and their families. For the last few years, hundreds of militants have been killed. Militants can't defeat policemen now targeting unarmed policemen and there families, to pressure them not to participate in operations," the official said. Earlier, he said that militants used to target the political workers. Several people associated with the NC and the PDP have been killed in Pulwama and Shopian districts of south Kashmir. "The attacks and threats have created panic among all workers of mainstream parties and policemen and their families in south Kashmir," Sharif Ahmad said, a political worker, who wished not to mention the name of his village. His family, he says is "worried" about his security. "My family wants me to quit the party which I refused. I am an ardent supporter of the PDP. I hope that attacks on political activists will end soon," he said. A PDP leader of Shopian said the political workers were worried for their safety. |
