Srinagar, Apr 26: The militant attack on a police post near the highly fortified Police Headquarter in the summer capital of Srinagar has left the security agencies in a tizzy. On April 26 night, at around 10:30 PM, militants attacked Police Post in Goripora Hyderpora near Police Headquarter and decamped with four weapons. Official sources said as many as seven heavily armed militants stormed the police post. "When seven militants are believed to be involved in the attack, it means over one dozen militants may have been involved in the overall operation," said a police official on the condition of anonymity. Security analysts said it was for the first time in the last around a decade that such a big number of militants appeared in the summer capital that too in a fortified area. "This is one of the most fortified areas in the Kashmir, as strategically, apart from the police headquarter, it houses the Airport Road and the national highway," said a police official. He said such an attack in a fortified area has raised many questions. "When the militants manage such a strike in one of the most fortified areas of the city, their presence elsewhere can only be imagined," said a security analyst monitoring situation. Sources said soon after the incident, the Inspector General of Police Kashmir range called a meeting to review the situation. Sources said the police brass was shocked at the attack. "Such an attack was not possible unless the militants had done thorough reccee of the area. And this means that militants had been active in the area, which is at a stone's throw from the PHQ, for quite some time," said a security analyst. Sources said during the police meeting concerns were raised over the VIP movement on the Airport Road and movement of Army convoys on the adjoining Hyderpora highway. Sources said given the attack on police post, the security agencies will have to review security arrangements in this "sensitive area." Sources said a joint meeting of various security agencies was on the cards, to evolve "improved strategy with much better coordination." |
