Soon after Ramzan ceasefire announced in Kashmir, encounter breaks out in Shopian | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 16: Hours after the announcement by the Union Home Ministry to halt operations in Jammu and Kashmir during the holy month of Ramzan, an exchange of fire between militants and the security forces took pkace in Shopian on Wednesday afternoon. Preliminary reports suggest there was an "exchange of fire" in Shopian's Jamnagri area. "We are cross checking the details. No cordon and search operation was launched in the area," said a Srinagar-based spokesman. The joint team active in the area included the personnel of the CRPF, Special Operation Group (SOG) and the Army's 23 PARA commandos. Sources said there were no reports of any militant trapped or killed in the area. Earlier in the day, security forces launched a search operation in forest area of Tral in Pulwama district following a brief exchange of firing with militants, a police official said. He said the security forces launched a search operation as the ultras fled in thick vegetation of the forest. In a major decision, the Centre on Wednesday asked security forces not to launch operations in Jammu and Kashmir during the holy month of Ramzan. The decision has been taken to help the peace loving Muslims observe Ramzan in a peaceful environment, a Home Ministry spokesperson said. However, the, Lashkar-e-Taiba has rejected the ceasefire offer, the spokesman of the militant outfit said. |
