Clashes in Kashmir on Eid, 20-year-old killed in grenade blast: Police
6/16/2018 10:42:32 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 16: A twenty year old man was killed in South Kashmir's Anantnag town on Saturday when clashes broke out between police and civilians soon after Eid-ul-Fitr prayers.
Around ten people were injured in the clashes at Anantnag's Janglat Mandi area. Sheeraz Ahmad, of Brakpora, died of his injuries later, doctors said. The police used tear gas shells and pellet guns to disperse the crowd.
The police said Ahmad was killed in a hand grenade explosion. "Preliminary investigation reveals that a hand grenade exploded, resulting in the death of Sheraz Ahmad of Brakpora due to splinter injuries and his right hand got fully damaged. Further details are being ascertained," a police spokesperson said.
There were more reports of violence in the state on Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramzan.
In Pulwama, nearly 40km from Anantnag, a crowd protested on Saturday against the killing of a teenager in alleged Army firing a day before, police said. This was the first civilian death in Army firing since the security forces froze operations in Kashmir for Ramzan.
Incidents of stone-pelting were also reported from Shopian and clashes also took place in Srinagar's Eidgah area where large crowds of devotees had gathered to offer congregational Eid prayers.
Clashes between protestors and law enforcing agencies were also reported from Sopore and Kupwara areas in north Kashmir, officials said.
Over the past week, Jammu and Kashmir has been rocked by the killing of senior journalist Sujhaat Bukhari and Army jawan Aurangzeb.
The spate of violence has thrown up questions over the Centre's suspension of operations against militants for the holy month of Ramzan. An announcement is expected on Sunday.
