New Delhi may not extend ceasefire post-Eid | Pressure from within | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 16: The Narendra Modi-led NDA Government is likely to end unilateral ceasefire or suspension of operations in Jammu & Kashmir post-Eid. This is what the reports emanating from the New Delhi's corridors of power suggest. What has influenced the thinking of the policy-planners in the South and North Blocks in New Delhi are several instances of attacks on unarmed peaceful civilians and army and para-military forces. The murder of journalist Shujaat Bukhari and brutal killing of Army Rifleman Aurangzeb of Poonch in South Kashmir's Shopian have also become two other tipping points. In fact, these two murders have changed the whole scenario. Besides, the Narendra Modi Government is under "tremendous pressure from its own cadre". They all want the BJP Government to end the unilateral ceasefire. The RSS, the BJP's mentor, has maintained that the "suspension of operations has served little or no purpose". As a result, the Government of India was engaged in discussion on the eve of Eid on the pros and cons of ending the unilateral ceasefire. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday evening met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his official residence and the two discussed threadbare the prevailing situation in the state in general and Kashmir Valley in particular. Situation on the International Border and Line of Control also came up for discussion. Top sources in the RSS said: "The Sangh is of the view that the suspension of operations should end as killing of civilian and attacks on the army and para-military have continued unabated during the month of Ramzan. This has been conveyed to the government in clear terms". Significantly, a couple of BJP ministers in the Mehbooba Mufti-led coalition government too have expressed themselves against the idea of extending unilateral ceasefire beyond Eid. Deputy CM Kavinder Gupta has even reportedly said that "ceasefire will not be extended". As for the security agencies, they are against extension of ceasefire, with some former Generals dismissing the Ramzan ceasefire as a "strategic blunder". All this suggests that the Narendra Modi Government is unlikely to extend the unilateral ceasefire. Reports from New Delhi suggest that Home Minister Rajnath Singh would make a statement on the issue on Sunday. |
