Let militant killed in Handwara, AK-47 recovered

KUPWARA, July 19: A militant of LeT outfit was killed today in a brief exchange of fire between security forces and a group of militants in Batpora village of Magam forests in Handwara area of this north Kashmir district.
A top police official while talking to Early Times said that, a militant possibly of LeT outfit was killed in a gunfight with government forces in Batpora village of Magam forest of Handwara area.
Pursuing credible leads regarding the presence of militants in Batapora village of Magam area in Handwara thesil, a joint patrol of the security forces today in the afternoon hours launched cordon and search operation against the militants in the area, the police official said.
He said that there was an input about the presence of 2-3 militants after which our men carried searches; however a hiding militant fired on the search party.
The fire was retaliated and in the ensuing encounter, the militant was successfully eliminated by the joint team of security forces. Though there was no collateral damage during the encounter, said police official.
"On the basis of the incriminating materials recovered, the killed militant is learnt to be a foreigner (Pakistani national) and was affiliated to the proscribed militant outfit of Lashkar-e Toiba (LeT).
"Some arms and ammunition including one AK-47 rifle was also recovered from the encounter site," he said.
Police has registered a case and investigation has been initiated in the instant matter.
Meanwhile in another militancy related incident, sources said that suspected militants on Thursday afternoon attacked a joint party of police and CRPF in Sopore town of Baramulla district.
We have learnt from our sources that reportedly two suspicious persons, mostly militants were riding on a motorbike fired upon a joint team of police and CRPF at Noorbagh in Sopore town, however, there were no immediate reports of any loss of life or damage.
Soon after the attack, a joint team of police, CRPF have launched the searches to nab the assailants, the operation against the militants is on in the area, the army official told ET.
