Reasi tragedy: Timely action could have averted disaster

Early Times Report

Reasi, July 19: Timely action and foresight on part of the administration could have averted the tragedy that struck the Picnic spot of Sair Baba at Reasi and left several people dead.
The people of the area allege that the though the holy place of Sair Baba is situated at scenic spot that has a big waterfall where pilgrims take the holy dip, the administration should have taken care of the loose rocks surrounding the water fall.
Locals regretted that while the administration had leased out shops at the spot at handsome amount, it has shown least interest in ensuring the ease and safety of the pilgrims and tourists visiting the place. "If part of the lease money was utilized for safety of the tourists, this tragedy could have been averted" said a local.
"A water fall is bound to bring boulders and rocks down as water keeps on coming from mountains regularly. There have been earlier instances also of a boulder or a heavy rock coming down with the splash of water, but such incidents have been occurring only when no pilgrimage is in process," he added.
He said that while administration was aware of such falls occurring regularly , why it did not come up with a comprehensive embankment or walling plan on the top of the fall so that accidents could have be avoided "When it is a holy spot of pilgrimage, the administration should have taken the cognizance of the unforeseen eventualities and should have utilized the money it generated from two shops given on yearly lease Where does that money go?," said another local of the area.
All attempts to reach the deputy commissioner Reasi turned futile as his phone was unreachable. The people of the area have appealed to the Governor N N Vohra to take immediate steps for some embankments and wall construction from the point of water fall to avoid recurrence of such incidents.
