Militancy in J&K & northeast has disabled many personnel | | | When on an average over 200 per sonnel of the armed forces get disabled in Jammu and Kashmir it is a big loss to the armed forces. The loss is double. These disabled personnel are not in a position to serve anymore. And secondly these disabled personnel are liable to get pensionary benefits. Losing 200 personnel a year is a big loss to the Army and the security forces and this loss has not been measured in the din of human rights violations by separatists and Pakistani agents. It calls for fresh recruitment in the Armed forces because India has to be ready with strong manpower in the Army and the paramilitary forces. Fresh recruitment may burden the nation's exchequer. And the cause of disability is not only in stone pelting or in encounters with the militants but in the natural disasters, including landslides, avalanches and road accidents. Invariably armed forces personnel get disabled when they are attacked by grenades and bombs. Nearly 200 armed forces personnel become disabled every year, a senior doctor for the forces has said, citing road accidents and snow avalanche, especially in hilly terrains, and battle injuries as the prime reasons. Lt Gen Bipin Puri, Director General of the Armed Forces Medical Service, said the disability armed forces personnel suffer are not only related to spinal cord and limbs - one of the most commonly noticed. Many a time there are cases of crippling of intestine and lungs due to injury to abdomen and chest, Lt Gen Puri said. He said in the armed forces medical service, the primary motto is to save life by resorting to damage-control surgery."Every year 200 armed forces personnel suffer from serious disability. It is a huge number. Battle injuries are of course the reason, but more of our injuries are because of accidents in hilly terrains, snow avalanche," Puri stated., citing the data available with him for the past 10 years. The Indian Army is engaged in anti-militancy operations in Jammu and Kashmir and northeast India. The Army alone has more than 10 lakh personnel. Lt Gen Puri said the journey from being a disabled trooper to an abled person is challenging and the Army has take steps to mitigate the problems faced by its troops in this regard."There are physical, emotional, psychological and social issues involved in this," he said. The Army, he said, has an Artificial Limb Centre, a premier institute in Pune, to address the problems related to disability of limbs. And once a personnel received artificial limbs he is no longer required within the Army. This way terror has taken a lot of loss among the personnel. No doubt the volatile LoC and the IB in Jammu and Kashmir too has accounted for major losses during the time Pakistani forces resort to ceasefire violations. Still the morale of the Indian troops continue to be high and each and every personnel takes his disability as part of the game and his profession. |
