Unity in Kashmir to disintegrate J&K | News analysis | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 1: All, without in any exception, have united in Kashmir to defend unconstitutional Article 35-A. Some have threatened that there will a "civil war" in Kashmir if this Article was repealed. They are from Congress. Some have declared that the "issue of accession will be reopened" and that "there will be no place for national tricolour in the state if this Article was abolished". They are from the NC. Some have said that "there will be no one in Kashmir to give shoulder to the national flag if Article 35-A was fiddled with" and "all will parish if Article 370 was amended, modified or repealed". They are from the PDP. Some have gone to the Supreme Court as interveners to defend Article 35-A. They are from the CPI-M. As for separatists and Pakistani agents like Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz and Yasin Malik and their supporters in the educational institutions, business organizations and legal fraternity, they have all given a two-day bandh call on August 5 and 6 in Kashmir and threatened that "India would face serious troubles in the Valley if the Centre tinkered with Article 370". It is intriguing that while Kashmiri leaders of all hues do not love Indian Constitution, they support Articles 35-A and 370. Why this selective approach? Either should oppose the Indian Constitution in full or they should support it in toto. They can't have a selective approach. The unity among Kashmiri outfits, "mainstream" and separatist, business organizations, Kashmir Bar Association and academia have all the potential of further widening the emotional, political and social gulf between Kashmir and Jammu and between the former and Ladakh. It would be no exaggeration to say that the J&K, which consists of three disparate regions of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh will disintegrate if the Kashmiri leaders continued to behave like they behaved post-1947. They should remember that they are not the only factor in the state's political situation. Jammu and Ladakh are also there and they cannot be ignored. They should also remember that it was the otherwise powerless and ignored people of Jammu who brought down four Kashmiri dominated governments in 1953, 1977, 2008 and 2018. But it is difficult to say that attitude of Kashmir leaders would change. In the meantime, the Jammu & Kashmir BJP on Tuesday came down heavily on Kashmiri leaders and accused them of provoking people of Kashmir and putting pressure on the Supreme Court. It said what the Kashmiri leaders said and did about Article 370 amounted to contempt of court. The BJP did make a point. Of course, what they Kashmiri leaders have been saying and doing amounts to contempt of court. At the same time, however, BJP's stand on Article 35-A has been ambiguous and vague. It did say on Tuesday that Article 35-A was unconstitutional, discriminatory and against the principle of justice and equality. |
