'Military offensive' against militants on cards in South Kashmir | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 25: In the wake of recent surge in the killing of cops in south Kashmir, the government plans to undertake a "major military offensive" against the militants active in the region. Sources said in the wake of killing of around one dozen cops in the recent past, including three on Eid ul Azha when the trio was with their families to celebrate the festival, the government has taken a serious note of the terror activities that have shaken the people of the state. Sources said the police department is fed of such attacks while the Union Home ministry has taken a serious note of the militant activities and wants that the operation all out be intensified. Sources said the police and other forces especially Army are of the opinion that a major Cordon and Search Operation should be carried out in the south Kashmir districts of Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam to start with. Sources said the top brass in the security forces are formalizing a strategy to undertake a major offensive where Indian Army will at the forefront to weed to militancy. It was reliably learnt that Governor's Advisor, K Vijay Kumar had been keenly tracking the developments and recently held a series of meetings with the concerned including the Director General of Police SP Vaid and senior functionaries of the Indian Army. Sources said the security grid has unanimously agreed that there is a need for a major military offensive to break the back of militants active in the state. Sources said the plan would be discussed with the new Governor SP Malik as he needs to be apprised about the developments. "See he (Malik) has just taken charge so he needs to be apprised about the situation in Kashmir," said a senior official. Militant attacks have suddenly risen to alarming levels. On August 22, the first day of Eid-al-Azha, militants barged into the house of inspector Muhammad Ashraf Dar in Larve village in Pulwama district and fired at him from a close range. Dar died on the spot. On the same day, an under-training constable Fayaz Ahmed Shah was shot at when he was returning home after offering Eid prayers at Kulgam. He succumbed later. The third to be killed that day was SPO Muhammad Yaqoob Shah of Pulwama district. |
