Now militants target power stations in Kashmir | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 27: Failing to fight security forces, the militants in Kashmir have started to target government establishments that are providing essential services to the people of the state. In the latest, on the intervening night of October 26 and 27, the militants tried to attack the grid Station Wagoora in Nowgam in Central Kashmir. Official sources said the heavily armed militants tried to storm the restricted area in the bid to damage the power network. But the attack was successfully repulsed by the alert sentry at the spot. In keeping militants away from the restricted site that provides power to central Kashmir, one Assistant Sub Inspector, Rajendra Prasad of the CISF lost his life. A senior official said if the grid station was damaged in the militant attack the power supplies in entire central Kashmir including Srinagar would remain affected for months together and that areas would have to reel under darkness for long. "Wagaoora grid station is of critical importance for central Kashmir, any damage to the network there would mean damage to the entire power distribution center in region and that biggest trouble would be for Srinagar," said a senior official on the condition of anonymity. He said given the proceeding winter months, it would have been difficult for the Power Development Department to undertake repairs of the power network if it was damaged. "But the security forces have safeguarded our assets yet again," the government official added. Given the attack the security agencies haven't ruled out that it could be the conspiracy of Pakistan to destroy infrastructure in Kashmir. "Power stations are strategically targeted in wars, so let's not rule out that Pakistan wants Kashmir to be warzone," said a security analyst on the condition of anonymity. Sources said the Power Development Department will be formally thanking the security forces particularly CISF for foiling the militant attack. When a contacted a senior police official said it couldn't be ruled out if the attack was part of some deep rooted conspiracy to deprive Kashmir of its power resources. But ironically the regional parties including the National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party didn't utter a word to pay homage to the CISF who lost his life safeguarding the grid station. "These two parties often talk of power resources but forgot to pay tributes to the man who saved these resources," said a police official. |
