BARAMULLA, Oct 27: Just few days ahead of filing nomination papers for Panchayat elections, a Panchayat building was Saturday set ablaze by some unknown persons in Nowpora area of Sopore. According to sources, some people who were coming out of a mosque after the evening prayers saw the Panchayat ghar in Nowpora up in flames. Superintendent of Police (SP) Sopore, Javid Iqbal told Early Times that the building was set on fire by some miscreants. North Kashmir had remained peaceful throughout the ULB elections that were held earlier this month. Pertinently the Chief Electoral Officer, Jammu, and Kashmir Shaleen Kabra on Tuesday issued notification for first phase of Panchayat polls-2018 to elect Sarpanches and Panches. The notification has been issued for some of the north Kashmir areas including Keran, Teetwal, Tangdar in District Kupwara, Gurez, Baktoor, Tulail in District Bandipora, Kunzer, Uri, Parenpillan, Noorkhah, Kandi-Belt Rafiabad in Baramulla district. According to the notification, the last date for making nominations is October 30. The date for the scrutiny of nominations is October 31, the last date for withdrawal of candidature is November 2. The polling is scheduled on November 17, which is also the date of counting of votes. |
