Early Times Report
Kishtwar, Oct 28: In order to put the pressure on the State and Union Government demanding cancellation of proposed 1200 MW Budsar Power Project to be constructed on River Marusudar in Marwah area of Kishtwar District, the people of Marwah and Warwan have decided not to contest the Panchayat elections to be held in the Marwah and Warwan block of Kishtwar constituency in first phase.
As per the details available with "early Times" the villagers from nearly two dozen villages of Marwah and Warwan held a meeting in which the political and social activities belonging to various political, social and religious organizations had decided to abstain from contesting the election on 19 Panchayats for which the notification has already been issued.
The people of Marwah informed "Early Times" that the decision of poll boycott was unanimously taken by the people after all party meeting in which all the local leaders belonging to NC, PDP, Congress & BJP along with other social and religious organization participated.
After consensus on the Panchayat election boycott, the calls were made from the loudspeakers of the mosques asking the people not to take part in the election process.
"The government plans to rehabilitate people at some other location but the point is that we don't want to leave our ancestral place as it is the only means of livelihood for us," Ghulam Rasool Magrey, a social activist said and added that there is a conspiracy against the people of Marwah.
Another local Abdul Wahid said that the area falls under Sesimic Zone IV and is earthquake prone added that if the government has decides to go ahead with construction of the power project, which will be a disaster for whole area. The people also blamed the Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar for keeping them in dark beside also for partying with the project management to drive the people out of their lands.
It is pertinent to mention that people held over 50 days long protest earlier this year over the issue and after assurance from the government, they call off the protest as well as the strike, but to the disappointment of the people, the NPHC and its partner had decided to go ahead with the plan forcing the people to take extreme step of announcing boycott of Panchayat elections.
