No university in trans-Himalayan region even after 71 years of independence | Ladakhi patience may be at an end | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 2: An extreme form of anger has gripped the trans-Himalayan Ladakh. This time, it is the youth of the region who have come forward to fight for a regime that frees them from Kashmir and enables them to acquire higher education in their own region uninterrupted. On Thursday, thousands of students from Ladakh's Leh and Kargil districts held protest demonstrations across north India, including Delhi, Chandigarh, Jammu, Leh and Kargil and demanded a separate university for their region saying they had suffered huge educational losses because their colleges were affiliated to the Kashmir University, which had failed to protect and promote their educational interests. In Jammu, they even blocked Tawi bridge for almost two hours. "We have been neglected by the successive governments for the past seven decades and no major initiative was taken by any of these governments in the state to cater to our educational needs", they said, adding that "nearly 68,000 students from the Ladakh region" had suffered because of the lack of educational facilities in the region, especially as far as higher education was concerned. The Vice-Chancellor of Kashmir University Prof Talat Ahmad, did act and de-linked colleges in Leh and Kargil from the Kashmir University and announced that Kashmir University would set up sub-offices in each district for the examination process - from setting papers for examination to declaring results. He even announced that a separate Controller of Examination would be appointed for Ladakh to ensure that examinations were held on time and there was no delay in the declaration of results. However, information emanating from Leh and Kargil and the statements of Ladakhi students in Jammu suggest that the people of the Cold-desert region were not happy and that they wanted a separate and full-fledged university for their region. It is strange that Ladakh was not considered fit for the establishment of a separate university. One can only hope that the Governor administration will appreciate the demand as raised by the Ladakhi students and set up a separate university for the region. Such a gesture would go a long way in meeting the long-pending demand of the Ladakhis. They are already angry because Ladakh doesn't find place in the nomenclature of the state. |
