Traffic remains suspended on Ladakh highway, Kargil facing shortage of essentials | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 24: Traffic remained suspended on Srinagar-Leh national highway, the only road linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir following directions by the divisional authorities to avoid any accident as the road was slippery due to accumulation of snow and below freezing temperature at several places. Due to the road closure the border town of Kargil is facing acute shortage of essentials and there are 100 vehicles stranded at several places during the closure of the highway. Only one-way traffic was plying on Srinagar-Jammu national highway and historic 86-km-long historic Mughal road. Traffic will ply from Kashmir to Jammu today and no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction, an official said. On Mughal road, traffic will ply from Rajouri and Poonch to Shopian in South Kashmir, he said. Meanwhile, chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) Kargil, Feroz Ahmad Khan said there was acute shortage of essential commodities in the district. Khan claimed that the highway is reported to be clear after the recent snow clearance operations. There are about 100 light and heavy vehicles stranded on both sides of Zojila, connecting Ladakh with Kashmir, Khan has said in a communication to Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir who has ordered closure of the road till further orders. The CEC convened an important meeting of the concerned officers at the Council Secretariat at Kargil yesterday in the light of the notification issued by the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir regarding the closure of Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri road (Zojila Pass) for all types of vehicular traffic with effect from November 22, 2018 till further notice. |
