NC, Congress, PDP will not contest next elections jointly: Omar Abdullah | Grand alliance that really didn't exist | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 24: Just on November 21, Mehbooba Mufti, owner of PDP, announced formation of what she called "Grand Alliance" to form coalition government in the state. According to her, Farooq Abdullah/Omar Abdullah, proprietors of NC, and Congress of Rahul Gandhi were two other parts of the Grand Alliance. According to power-sharing formula reached between the three Kashmir-based outfits, PDP was to lead the government with the Congress becoming its part and the NC supporting the coalition government from outside. The self-proclaimed Grand Alliance leader Mehbooba Mufti did all that she could to stake the claim for government formation, but failed as, according to her, fax machine at the official residence of Governor SP Malik could not receive her fax. The result was that the Governor didn't invite the PDP to form government. Instead, he dissolved the assembly the same day and a day later said that he would not have invited the PDP or the so-called third front leader Sajad Lone to form government even if he had received the request through fax or otherwise as he had the information that there would be horse-trading on an unprecedented scale and money would be used to purchase MLAs. The so-called Grand Alliance was formed in a dramatic manner and it was also over in a dramatic manner with NC vice-president Omar Abdullah asserting that the alliance was formed with a purpose and there was no possibility the NC, the PDP and the Congress contesting the next elections jointly. "Jammu & Kashmir's 'grand alliance' to install a PDP-led coalition government was designed to 'save' the state and does not imply that the three parties - the National Conference, Congress and the Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP - would jointly contest the next election," former chief minister Omar Abdullah has said. Omar Abdullah also called the bluff of the PDP and revealed that "till the point the Governor dissolved the assembly, his party had not given a letter of support to the PDP". But more than that, he has asserted that "even if they would have given such a letter, it would only have been to form an immediate government and that it was not a permanent arrangement". The PDP had claimed that it had the support of 58 MLAs and it was incumbent upon the Governor to invite it to form government. So if what Omar Abdullah has said and revealed after the dismissal of the assembly, it can be said that everything was in the air and the PDP leaders created a sort of confusion by making baseless statements. That's the reason the PDP has suggested that it would not knock the doors of a court to get the dissolved assembly revived. Interestingly, the NC has also taken the same line and overruled the possibility of anyone from the party to challenge the Governor's decision in a court of law. "Legally, we don't have a case to make. As I don't have a document on which to claim Governor ignored what we had to say. My conversation was with PDP. It's for PDP to decide whether it wants to take legal recourse. I didn't provide documentary support," he has said. Very significantly, the PDP has not so far reacted to what Omar Abdullah has said and revealed. It's obvious that the PDP is on a weak footing and has no argument to advance to country Omar Abdullah. |
