JKNPP seeks recovery of fine from SIDCO officers | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 1: Welcoming the verdict of National Green Tribunal (NGT) imposing a penalty of Rs. 5 Crores on J&K State Industrial Development Corporation (SIDCO) for the latter's failure to curb the dumping of waste and poisonous effluents in Samba's Basantar river, Harsh Dev Singh Chairman JKNPP sought recovery from the officers of SIDCO. "The fine drawn from the public exchequer would not act as deterrent for the dishonest and unscrupulous officers who are squarely responsible for causing destruction to the river Basantar , manifestation of life consuming toxic effluents besides turning the adjacent areas infertile for agriculture", Harsh said. Aggrieved over the disregard for norms and breach of SC and NGT directives earlier by the pollution causing units and pesticide industries in Jammu region, Harsh Dev Singh said that their mushroom growth had caused a huge ecological imbalance, diseases and human casualties. He accused the defiant 'influential class' of enriching their coffers at the cost of lives of common people in collusion with the corrupt functionaries in the government. Coming down heavily on the pesticides and chemical industries in particular, he regretted that such toxic units continue to be allowed to operate in J&K especially Jammu region despite their highly hazardous effects including nausea, nervous and respiratory, paralysis, reproduction problems, environmental toxicity, chest discomforts, skin ailments, cancer etc. "We had lodged several protests against such units in Jammu and outside the office of JKSPCB for appropriate action against the culprits but now our genuine demand has been vindicated by the NGT's verdict. It had noted that the water sample and ambient air quality are exceeding the limits and sewer waste water is exceeding the standard limits for majority of parameters. It also took into account that untreated sewage waste and industrial effluents are being discharged in the river due to delay in establishment of waste treatment plants. Taking a jibe at J&K State Pollution Control Board (JKSPCB), he regretted that much hyped waste treatment facility technically called Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) had not been installed for more than a decade now which had been accepted by the board. "The board has to act tough now. Appropriate coercive measures including prosecution for the violations pertaining to toxic waste disposal, etc have to be initiated strictly in conformity of NGT's directions and in case of failure we shall be forced to launch a colossal mass movement in the interest of ecology and welfare of the people of Jammu Pradesh", warned Harsh. |
