Only one way traffic on Kashmir-Leh highway, Mughal road | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 1: Hundreds of vehicles, including trucks loaded with essential and oil tankers, left different parts of Jammu region for Kashmir valley on Saturday as only one-way traffic will continue to ply on the national highway till further orders. Ladakh-bound vehicles stranded at Sonamarg in the central Kashmir district of Ganderbal, were allowed to leave to cross over to other side of the Zojila, where snow has accumulated and road remained slippery during morning and evening due to below freezing temperature. Only one-way traffic is allowed on the historic 86-km-long Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region. Keeping in view the weather and road conditions due to frequent landslides and shooting stones, only one-way traffic would continue to ply on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, a traffic police official said this morning. Today traffic will ply from Jammu to Srinagar, he said, adding that no vehicle, including security force convoy, would be allowed from opposite direction. He said Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) will be allowed from morning. However, these vehicles have to pass Udhampur before 1400 hrs. But, he said, the Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) will be allowed from Udhampur from 1400 hrs upto 2400 hrs, he said, adding that no vehicle will be allowed to park between Nashree tunnel to Jawahar tunnel. The historical Mughal road is also open for only one way and today traffic will ply from Shopian towards Buffliaz. However, due to slippery road conditions in the morning and evening because of sub zero temperature, vehicles shall be allowed to ply from 0900 hours to 1600 hours only. Meanwhile, on Srinagar-Sonamarg road, stranded vehicles from Srinagar side shall be allowed from Sonamarg towards Kargil today. No vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction, he said, adding that people are requested to undertake a journey only after confirming the status of the road. |
