Saffronites - Belittling Nehru | | Omkar Dattatray | 12/1/2018 10:33:02 PM |
| It has not been said without sound and valid basis that "If Sardar Patel is the iron man of India then Nehru is the non- ferrous metal ever - rustles and restless." It is most unfortunate that ever Tom, Dick and Harry is pointing fingers and trying to belittle the importance of the first prime minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru more so the saffronites . But the fact remains that significance and the contribution of Nehru in the development of India and in strengthening the democracy cannot be over emphasized in any manner. Not only those who matter in the estimation of the gullible masses of India but Nehru is often criticized even after 54 years of his death by the saffron outfits political and social and all rightwing political parties just for their selfish vote bank politics thus befooling the innocent people of the state. They are greatly mistakenly impressed by these saffron satraps. But the fact remains that the role of Nehru in the progress and development of the Indian nation and that too just after attaining freedom from the imperialist yoke . When the nation had not come to terms with the unfortunate division of the country and its shattered economy in the post independent India cannot be over exaggerated at any cost. Thus the stature and the role of Nehru in pre and post independent India is an open book and thus the attempts of saffronites and others cannot belittler Nehru and his contributions which are manifold and deserve appreciation by all well meaning people. Thus the efforts to belittle Nehru's stature has very few takers among the literate people of the country and even the ignorant and illiterate masses do recognize the role of contribution of Nehru towards nation building and inlaying strong edifice for the economic, industrial and socio-cultural development of the country. Despite the criticism leveled by ruling BJP and its saffronite family the importance and significance of Nehru cannot be belittled howsoever that they may try. Therefore, it better to see the reality and appreciate the role and contribution of Nehru in the nation building and its transition to democracy and to its economic and social development. J.L Nehru was not only the first PM of the country who has ruled India for about sixteen years from 1947 to 1964 but was one of the tallest leaders of pre and post independent India. He was not only a politician of great standing, a freedom fighter, thinker, writer of repute, historian but was a great statesman, an upright parliamentarian and a public orator of great outstanding and thus his role and genius cannot be denied and his standing and stature cannot be diminished how so ever his opponents and detractors may try because the image of a great men cannot be belittled by the superficial rhetoric and criticism by the various political parties particularly the BJP led government. It was Nehru who laid a strong foundation for the economic development of the country and also was the architect of the strong foreign policy. He believed in non- alignment so far as the international affairs were concerned and was the apostle of non- alignment and never leaned to any of the power block in those days. Nehru insisted that India should follow an independent foreign policy. Thanks to Nehru's foreign policy India acquired high political viability and played a creative role internationally. Nehru's foreign policy mediated and contributed towards a better understanding between two super powers and it brought the countries of third world war together. The main contributions of Nehru's strategy of building modern India were the institutions and strengthening of planning process, establishment of Public sector laying the base of modern agriculture by overthrow of feudal system, creation of a modern scientific and technological base and economic independence by development of heavy and basic industries and maximum development of our natural and human resources. He was the champion of mixed economy which leads to sustained and rapid growth. Nehru was in favour of socialistic pattern of society. He was in favour of laissez fair and believed in it. Even in capitalist economies state functions in socialistic ways. Nehru's nationalism was free from all bigotry and narrow mindedness. Nehruven model of development and his economic thought which often is called Nehruven economies is well known as it has modified the grass root condition in India and transformed India into a stable economy just after freedom. Nehruven model of development was based on four pillars of parliamentary democracy, secularism, economic planning for the establishment of a welfare state and policy of non- alignment. According to economist and Raja Sabhya member Bhalchandra Mungeker Nehruven model of development is still relevant even after reforms and economic liberalization and the 1st Prime Minister deserves appreciation and respect. Nehru had laid strong foundation for the economic growth for the nation though 4% growth was ridiculed as Hindu rate of growth. Nehruven model can be applied and adapted even today with suitable modifications and even his non - alignment is still relevant even though cold war is a ting of past. Nehruven socialism should not be treated as a dirty word as has become a fashion in economic and political circles to decry Nehru. Planning commission is the gift of Nehru and it is his brain child and it has transformed India into a developing nation from a backward country and its significance in the development of countries economy and its planned development cannot be denied not withstanding the fact that Modi has removed planning commission and has rechristened it as NITI Ayoug in true with his obliterating everything that Indian National Congress has done. For Nehru modernization was India's national philosophy and it involved seven national goals of 1 national unity 2 parliamentary democracy 3 industrialization 4 socialism5 scientific temper6 non-alignment and 7 secularism. According to Nehru the industries are the temples of modern India. He was of the firm conviction that national development is not possible without the investment and development of the Industries. He believed that the development of scientific temper among the students, planners and administrators. Nehru is the architect of modern Indian state- a sovereign , socialist, secular and democratic republic. He was through and through a secularist and believed in secular democracy and he laid foundation of modern India. But the saffron satraps are against the philosophy of plural democracy and are habitual of denouncing Nehru and his policies. Even today development in economic and other fields was not possible without the sound edifice laid down by the great visionary and his scientific outlook and his thoughts about economics and development. In a way Congress party and its President Rahul Gandhi is right in saying that Modi the down to earth man and a man belonging to low economic and caste would not have been the prime Minister of the largest democracy of the world thanks to the strong foundation of parliamentary democracy laid by Nehru. Nehru is often blamed for the Kashmir problem. Modi blamed Nehru for the creation of Kashmir issue and its internationalization. There is some truth in this blame game but in spite of this blunder which is often talked about, the contribution of Nehruven thought and his role in the development of India is much more and the Kashmir issue as alleged by saffronites pales into insignificance given the development push to the post independent India and it effects upon modern day India. Even former President of India Pranab Mukherjee has said that Nehru's foreign policy remains relevant even today. After enactment of the Constitution of India in 1950 it was Nehru who embarked on an ambitious programme of economic, social and political transformations. Thus Nehru was no traitor as the rightwing parties project him but was the architect of modern India. Nehru was a rationalist , a pragmatist ,secularist and a man of scientific outlook who wanted Indian bureaucrats to imbibe the scientific temper in the implementation of the national policies. Thus the role of Nehru in the development of modern India after independence cannot be overlooked and all the efforts of belittling pale into insignificance before the gigantic national reconstruction, modernization efforts launched by him. Therefore there is no scope and no ground for the saffronites crusade for belittling Nehru. |
