Ah clan and Gotra Politics! | | | Omkar Dattatray
Caste and communal politics is unfortunately the bane of Indian political system and it is at its peak at the time of elections. Come elections new caste and communal passions are raised by the political parties and their leaders. Now clan and gotra politics is becoming a subject of hot debate and discussion thanks to congress President and Scion of Gandhi Nehru clan Rahul Gandhi who has revealed his gotra recently in Rajasthan and thus raked the issue of gotra politics. It seems that political parties are deficit in finding out the real issues of bare existence that matter and the issues of bread and butter and developmental issues concerning people. These issues remain in the cold storage and only emotive issues like clan and gotra are raised. But the political satraps of different political parties are raking unnecessary issues which are least connected with the people's lives and have no bearing upon the gullible masses. Now that the general elections are coming nearer and the state assembly elections are going on, the political parties both Congress and BJP are raking unnecessary and useless issues to emotionalize and polarize the political situation in order to cultivate vote bank which is so dear to the political leaders cutting across political affiliations. Psephologist and political pundits see to it that politicians are using the emotive issues of cast and currently clan and gotra to justify their Hindu image thus they claim the gotras to impress the voters and oppose the political opponents only with an eye on votes and psephologists will predict the results in due course of time. The elections are round the corner and political parties are short of real and mundane issues which matter and thus they are in the lookout for outdated issues which are hardly concerned with the people's lives. Politicians seem to have exhausted all their arrows in their arsenal and are currently busy in clan and gotra politics to outnumber one another in the run up to elections and browbeat their opponents. How strange it is that in 21st century which is the century of science and technology, the Indian political parties and political satraps are working overtime to reveal their clan and gotras to garner support and earn votes. See the scion of Gandhi Nehru clan who has revealed and raked his gotra to prove his Hindu lineage and thus has he said that he is a Kashmiri Brahmin and claimed his gotra Koul Dattatraya. But the fact is that when the world is developing at a fast rate and performing and achieving scientific and technological feats, Indian politicians are busy in using clan and gotra politics to win elections. While development and peace should be the theme of our election battles, it is unfortunate that our leaders are raking their clan and gotra into the political discourse of the country. One fails to understand what Rahul Gandhi is trying to show by claiming that he is a Januedari Hindu and that too a Kashmiri Brahmin of Dattatreya clan. It is only to project his Hindu birth and culture. But at the same time he is giving lessons to Modi on Hinduism and Hindutva . While Congress president is criticizing Modi and BJP over latter's Hindutva, he is himself stepping into the shoes of BJP and is practicing soft Hindutva to gain access to the corridors of power in Delhi because Rahul Gandhi seems to realize that way to Delhi darbar is through Hundutva and at the same time he is wooing the muslims also behind the curtains. Thus he seems to be making a balancing act. Rahul Gandhi attacks his archrival Modi on his ignorance of Hinduism and Hindutva while the fact is that Modi is a well read man and has full knowledge of Hinduism and knows Hindutva which is the ideology of his party and which BJP calls Sanskritic Rashtrayawad. Therefore, Modi does not need lessons from anyone and more so from Rahul Gandhi who is so novice to religion. Rahul Gandhi is using competitive Hindutva to fight the saffron Modi in elections but in a way is helping BJP because his soft Hindutva policy may backfire and earn him nothing substantial in polls. Rahul Gandhi and his Congress Party is denigrating Modi and his cast and clan lineage. Some time ago Mani Shanker Ayar has called Modi 'neech' and this 'neech' terminology for Modi has given him support of the electorate and stunned the Congress and even Mani Shanker was suspended from the party. Not only Rahul Gandhi but UP Chief Minister and star campaigner of BJP Yogi Adityanath has remarked that Lord Hanuman is the descendent of Dalits and was a forest dweller and thus he also is using clan politics to garner votes and thus clan politics is not confined to Congress alone. UP Chief Minister has been criticized by the Dalits for his remark about lord Hanuman and now the Dalits are agitating to control the Hanuman temples and this is a new division and social strife in the country. Instead of good Social Engineering the UP CM and the Congress president is using clan and gotra politics this time. The sacred thread and brahminical character is an example of competitive Hindutva on which Rahul is now riding to capture the Delhi throne but will he be successful only time will tell. Rahul Gandhi has revealed and raised the issue of gotra into power politics and thus he is trying to beat his opponents with a stick of his gotra. He claims that he is a Kashmiri brahmin and a Jenuedhari Hindu. Gotra politics has recently become a political issue after Rahul Gandhi visited Pushkar temple in Rajasthan where he revealed his gotra. Rahul has said,"My gotra is Dattatreya, I am kashmiri Brahmin." In fact gotra politics has gripped the election season. Hindutva politics and war of gotra is going on. BJP says Rahul revealing gotra ia final blow to secular politics of Congress. Politics has touched very low and in this murkier politics BJP coined new gotra for Rahul Gandhi and called it gotra 'Itlus'. After Rahul Gandhi; Smriti Irani and Harsh Vardan Cabinet ministers got in the ring. Smriti Irani said that his father and mother are Hindus and her gotra is Kaushal. Whatever it is one thing is clear that we should march ahead and not go backwards and when the world is making great strides and achieving higher feats in science and technology, our politicians involve themselves in the war of words over gotra. They should rather raise mundane issues and developmental ones in electoral politics and not raise emotive caste, clan and gotra issues because people look for capability and credibility and not for caste, religion or race. |
