HC seeks report on framing rehabilitation policy for stone quarry owners | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 12: The High Court has sought a consolidated report from government regarding framing of policy for rehabilitation of dislocated stone quarry owners. Hearing a Public Interest Litigation, a division bench of Justices Ali Mohammad Magrey and Sanjeev Kumar directed the government to file report by next date of hearing. The government previously informed the court that it has identified alternate sites for the stone quarry holders in various districts except district Anantnag and Kupwara. The court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation, seeking an end to stone quarrying within forest demarcated areas in the state. The petitioner had claimed that there has been unabated stone quarrying within forest areas for a long period and that ban on the quarrying "appears to be only on the papers." The petitioner had also accused state authorities of lacking will to implement the orders of the court regarding the quarrying. A senior officer of Industries and Commerce Department had informed the court that the government has formed districts level committees for Anantnag, Baramulla, Budgam, Ganderbal, Kupwara and Pulwama headed by respective deputy commissioners to identify alternative sites for stone quarrying these districts. |
