DHS Jammu overlooks rural health institutions | Costly equipment lying defunct in absence of specialists | | Vijay Charak Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 16: Directorate of health services Jammu has failed to procure power back up system for the newly established Sub district hospitals (SDHs) of Kathua, which are very crucial for their effective functioning. Reliable sources in the department concern informed Early Times that in 2014-15, government under state plan had proposed power backup system for the newly established hospitals across state. The hospitals are situated in the areas which face huge power curtailment and to run the emergency services smoothly, the government had proposed to provide 20 KV power back up system to each of these hospitals including Bani, Basohli and Billawar. Sources further said that these rural hospitals were not capable of conducting major surgeries despite available infrastructure as the technical staff was not posted there. "Machineries worth crores have been installed in these hospitals but they are lying defunct because no experts have been posted here to operate the machines and they were gathering dust", sources alleged. "In papers , six specialists were sanctioned to each hospitals but on ground not a single specialist has been posted here" they added. Poor people of these areas have to take their patients to the GMC Jammu or to hospitals outside the state as these hospitals fail to address their needs due to paucity of staff.
