Over 59838 kanals of State land encroached | | | Saahil Suhail Early Times Report Anantnag, Dec 20: The tall claims of Revenue Department that measures to retrieve encroached state land fall flat as over 59838 Kanals of state land and grazing land is still under illegal occupation in South Kashmir's Anantnag district. As per the official record, Anantnag district has 165159 (One lakh sixty five thousand one hundred fifty nine Kanals of state land) and 136330 (One Lakh thirty six thousand three hundred thirty Kanals of grazing land. Togther the district has total of three Lakh fourteen thousand ninety (301490) state and grazing land. Out of 301490 kanals of state/grazing land, 76002 kanals of land was encroached from time to time by the people allegedly with the active support of revenue department officials. In past few decades exactly since 1971, The Revenue Department in Anantnag has just retrieved back sixteen thousand One Hundred sixty eight (16168) Kanals of land. Among twelve tehsils of the district, Anantnag, Shangus and Sallar has witnessed maximum encroachment of state and grazing land in past decades. In Anantnag, out of 36675 kanals of state land, 11155 is under illegal encroachment. Similarly in Shangus, out of 22913 kanals of state/grazing land, 11395 kanals of state land was encroached upon in 2011 while as in Sallar Tehsil having a total of 22672 kanals of state land 10997 kanals of state land were encroached upon from time to time. The data submitted by the Revenue Department to Financial Commissioner Kashmir and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir spells the beans and exposes the tall claims of higher-ups of the department. An official, associated with the process of evicting illegal encroachments told Early Times that the revenue department can't single-handedly do the job and retrieve back all the encroached land. "It needs a joint mechanism and support of local population. Revenue Department doesn't have enough resources to curb the illegal encroachments. At times we get back the encroached land but next we see the encroachers have grabbed that again because we couldn't fence that at appropriate time," he said. The officers was of the opinion that department like Rural Development Department should be roped in for developing the patches of state land as play fields at village level. "Rural department can also fence the area out of their own plan so that the land is protected from encroachers besides an awareness campaign is also required," he added. In 2001, Jammu and Kashmir Govt informed that over 20 Lakh kanals of state land were under illegal encroachment. "Most of the encroachments have taken place during 1990 and colonies have came up on the patches of state land," the then Revenue Minister has said in a written reply to Jammu and Kashmir Legislative council. |
