'Contribute from your pockets to participate in nationals' | | | Abodh Sharma
Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 31: Notwithstanding Government's intent and initiative to promote sports in J&K in a big way so that the youth of the state can be engaged positively, the Directorate of Youth Services and Sports which fields state teams in national school championships in various disciplines has told the players to contribute from their own pocket to participate in the national events. Hundreds of budding players of schools across the state who were selected in the state teams following inter district championships, are pleading before the officers of the DYS&S in Jammu and Srinagar, to send them for participation in the national championships, but they are being told that there were no funds available and if they wanted to participate, they must contribute from their own pockets. A parent who travelled to Jammu along with his son, who was selected in the state basketball team in under 19 category said, "Government is spending so much to promote sports in the country and the Prime Minister himself is encouraging the youth to participate in sports, but the DYS&S is refusing to send state teams telling that the department is bankrupt". "We have been asked to contribute not only for the participation of our child, but also for the expenses of the teacher who shall accompany the team to Delhi" he added. He appealed to the advisor to the Governor to look into the matter. Sources told that the department, which is infamously called department of youth (dis)services has gained notoriety over the years for nepotism and complete lack of professionalism and accountability. The district and inter district tournaments organized by the department are conducted in shabby and unprofessional manner and selections lack any objectivity. "The players representing the state in these nationals become eligible for concessions under Govt. SROand hence the officials include their relatives and kin in the teams. Unqualified officials are sent with the teams to the nationals, whose only motive is to siphon off funds meant for the players" said a player, adding that the officers of the department including the Director were adamant and high headed and had no interest or passion for sports. It is pertinent to mention that by depriving players an opportunity to participate in the national championships, the department is seriously denting the careers of the young players, who can be picked up for national camps and scholarships on the basis of their performance in these nationals. Repeated calls to several officers of the DYS&S failed to evoke any response. |
