4-days after snowfall, Kashmir craves for basic amenities | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad Early Times Report Srinagar, Jan 07: Four days after Kashmir received snowfall, the Governor administration is yet to restore the basic amenities to people in several parts of the valley. Kashmir received snowfall on Friday, and Saturday resulting in power breakdown. However, many areas of Kashmir are still craving for basic facilities. In south Kashmir's Kokernag district as the government has failed to restore the electricity. "The electricity is yet to be restored in many parts of Kokernag. These areas are reeling under darkness for the last six days," AliMohammad, a local resident said. He termed the assurances given by the government regarding the early restoration of electricity as "hollow and baseless". "People of this constituency have been suffering terribly due to the absence of electricity since the start of the recent bad weather and snowfall," he said. He said that Governor administration shall clear snow from Gowran to Madwa-Wadwan. Shabir Ahmad, a resident of Kokernag said that students preparing for different exams are not able to study in absence of the electricity. "We are without electricity for last many days and government is not paying any heed. Many roads have not been cleared yet," Shabir said. Mohammad Usman, a resident of Langate said that they receive electricity only for few hours. He said that electricity hasn't been restored in many hamlets of the south Kashmir. "The day to day working of the secondary and tertiary health care systems has been affected toting up the miseries of common people." A senior official said he would look into these issues. "People shall also approach the concerned authorities related to grievances and addressing of any problems," he added. The situation is almost same in other metered areas like Rajbagh, Natipora, Batamaloo, Bemina and Habak, where the residents too face abrupt power cuts. The situation is grim in non-metered areas. "We face 10-hour power cuts in a day," Shabir Ahmad, a resident of Shireen Bagh Karanagar, said. "Our children are not able to prepare for the exams due to power cuts in the evening hours. They have to study under candle light and lanterns," he said. Asif Ahmad, a resident of Safakadal, said they witness frequent power cuts from the last one week. "There are at least 20 power cuts of eight hours in a day. We don't know when the power supply will remain on and off," Asif said. "Every year we are assured of better power supply but the situation instead worsens," he added. The residents of main town Baramulla, said the unscheduled power cuts have made their lives "miserable". "We approached PDD officials many times, but to no avail," Basit Khan, a local resident, said. |
