KUPWARA, Jan 9: A massive fire created havoc at Prem Gali Handwara when flames caught shops and devastated at least ten shops during intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. According to locals that, a devastating fire on the intervening night of Jan 8-9, gutted at least ten shops at Handwara town of this north Kashmir district. A thick layer of smoke engulfed the area, after which the locals informed the police and the nearby fire tenders about this unfortunate incident, said sources. They said that, the intensity of fire was very much and in no time, it gutted the shops leading to a loss of property worth crores of rupees. An eyewitness told Early Times over the phone that fire engulfed the structures very fast and all the furniture inside the shops was gutted down. Soon after the incident, the locals rushed towards the spot to douse the flames, however, fire tenders reached a bit late, otherwise the flames could have been controlled timely, said eyewitness. Meanwhile police official present on the spot said that all the shops in a tin shed were completely damaged, and the cause of the fire is being ascertained. |
