According to locals of Ashpeer, today afternoon, the employees of Municipal Committee (MC) Sopore were seen carrying heaps of garbage in a handcart for dumping alongside the river bank of Jhelum near Ashpeer area in Sopore town. The locals said garbage is being dumped along the river for quite some time now. Bashir Ahmd of Sopore town told Early Times over the phone that, "apart from biodegradable waste from the households, a large quantity of non-biodegradable garbage including polythene and medical waste is dumped in an open space. Unfortunately, it has been made a political issue and the previous regimes have failed to solve this long pending demand of the people, said Bashir Ahmad. The water supply scheme on the river Jhelum is the only source of drinking water for its adjoining areas, including Ashpeer, Mahrajpora, New colony and other adjacent areas. It is very true that there is an absence of solid waste management facility and the garbage mounds are common scene here, for all these things the Municipal Council is doing nothing to address the problem, while as people living near to river banks suffers badly, said local residents of Sopore. |
