Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Feb 22: People who have been elected as corporators or councilors in the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) were expected to solve the civic problems of the people without any politics, but that is not to be.
These elected representatives of SMC today gave vent to their feelings more so political emotions during a session of the general council held at the main office of the Corporation. Four resolutions were adopted at the general council meeting with one resolution being highly political in nature.
During the session the councilors demanded that Articles 35-A and Article 370 need to be safeguarded at every cost and a foolproof mechanism needs to be evolved in this regard. Importantly, the councilors did not adopt any resolution with regard to sanitation of the summer capital of the state.
The councilors instead of discussing the matters related to overall sanitation of Srinagar wasted their time and carried out discussions on Articles 35-A and 370. The councilors did not touch upon the sanitation aspect of the city, but discussed a lot about their own 'welfare' and 'interest'. They demanded that operational allowances should be given to the councilors of SMC.
A group of people while sharing views with Early Times said that the councilors have utterly failed to solve the civic problems of the city, adding that SMC was working in a better manner few months back when there were councilors to man the same. They said that councilors need to be taken to task so that the problems of people are addressed.
"The SMC has turned out to be a political battlefield with the Mayor and Deputy Mayor pitted against each other. These two important people of the Corporation are indulging in mud-slinging and the functioning of Corporation has been badly hit.
Politics should come to an end so that councilors work and people heave a sigh of relief," said the group of people.
The group of people said that both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are working in contradiction to each other thus putting the people of the summer capital to the trouble. They demanded that state administration should intervene in the matter and issue directions to the Mayor and Deputy Mayor so that they work in unison and that too for the betterment of the people of Srinagar.
In a press release, SMC Media Relations Officer, Masrat Yousuf said that two day session of General Council of SMC under the chairmanship of Mayor Srinagar, Junaid Azeem Mattu was today concluded with the unanimous passage of four resolutions by the house. This was the fourth session of the General Council.
"Four resolutions that were adopted unanimously by SMC General Council are seeking foolproof defence of Article 35-A, Article 370, appeal to central government to ensure safety of Kashmiri students, operational allowances for Corporators and expediting emergent works through rate structures," said the Media Relations Officer.
