Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remains closed for second day | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 26: Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed on the second consecutive day due to continuous landslide at Moon Passi Ramsoo of district Ramban from yesterday morning. Hundreds of vehicles including heavy and light were stranded on both side of the landslide area. Men and machineries were put on work to clear the NH44 but at very slow pace. Putting their life at risk the stranded passengers crossed the landside spot from Bisleri Nallah with the help of QRT team Ramsoo. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic JS Johar said that the department as well as the concerned agencies is on the job to clear the NH44 but the continuous rainfall is hampering the restoration work. He advised the people not to start journey on NH44 without consulting the traffic police and appealed them to cooperate with traffic department. Later, adding to the woes of the people and the district administration the adjoining road of National Highway connecting District Administrative Complex Ramban sank due to unplanned construction work of four laning by GAMMON Company on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. Ironically, the said road was repaired by the concerned construction agency few months back but again it sank at the same place and the NH44 falling under Ramban town also witnessed big cracks after which the administration closed the NH44 for all type of vehicular traffic. In is pertinent to mention here that the houses adjoining to the National Highway received cracks and the owners of the houses many times approached to the district administration, but nothing has been done so far in this regard. People said that the though the construction company is working under the nose of district administration but the district administration is acting like a mute spectator to the activities of the company. Around three inches of fresh snowfall was experienced overnight around Jawahar Tunnel - the gateway to Kashmir, while rest of the highway was lashed by heavy rains. "The highway remains closed as of now and we are making efforts to make it traffic worthy as soon as possible," Deputy Superintendent of police, traffic (national highway) Pardeep Singh Sen told. |
