NIA carries out raids at residences of separatists, clashes break out at Maisuma | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Feb 26: National Investigation Agency (NIA) today raided the residential premises of at least nine separatists or their relatives in the different parts of summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir. The NIA searches started early in the morning and continued for the entire day. The searches were carried out at the residence of chairman of his faction of Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umar Farooq at Nigeen, residence of Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front Chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik at Maisuma and Nayeem Geelani, son of Syed Ali Shah Geelani chairman of his faction of Hurriyat Conference at Hyderpora. The NIA sleuths accompanied by Jammu & Kashmir Police personnel and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel carried out searches at nearly nine places across the Srinagar city. Raids were also carried out at the residences of Shabir Ahmad Shah at Sanat Nagar, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai at Baghat, Masarat Alam Bhat at Zaindar Mohalla-Habba Kadal and Zaffar Akbar Bhat at Baghi Mehtab. The raids were carried out in connection with a case relating to funds allegedly received by the various separatist leaders from Pakistan through hawala channels. In the past NIA raids were also carried out in the Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir valley along with the raids at Delhi and some other parts of the country. At Maisuma clashes broke out between agitating youth and police as well as CRPF personnel as soon as the NIA raids culminated at the residence of JKLF Chairman. The protesters threw stones at police and CRPF personnel and in return the police and security forces lobbed smoke shells on the agitating youth. Pertinenly, Malik is already under custody of police over the past few days. It would be in place to mention here that the authorities imposed restrictions in the Maisuma and adjacent areas and also in certain areas of downtown Srinagar in view of the raids being carried out by the NIA officials at the residence of different separatist leaders. The restrictions threw life out of gear in these areas and some other areas of Srinagar city as well. In the meantime, Joint 'Resistance' Leadership (JRL) comprising of Geelani, Mirwaiz and Malik has asked the people to observe shut down on February 27 and 28 against the NIA raids and the attempts to abrogate Article 35-A and Article 370. The JRL said that NIA officials even did not bother to knock the doors bells and straightaway barged into rooms of leaders and started vandalize their houses and intimidating their families. |
