Pre-poll alliance between NC, PDP: A million-dollar question | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Mar 17: When will the Election hold assembly elections in J&K? It is still not known. However, sources say that "assembly elections could be held between June 5 and June 30 in 6 to 8 phases taking into consideration the situation, Amarnath Yatra and the month of Ramzan" or it could be held in September-October. Reports from the corridors of power in Jammu suggested that the state administration wanted assembly elections to be held in "September-October". The possibility of elections has made certain elements in Kashmir to urge the National Conference (NC) and its arch-political rival People's Democratic Party (PDP) to forget all differences and fight the upcoming assembly elections jointly so that both the parties win a maximum number of seats and consolidate their hold over the assembly, the government and the government institutions. The votaries of the NC-PDP unity have said: "If the NC could join hands with the late Vajpayee's NDA and the Congress from time to time, why not with the PDP. Similarly, the PDP should not hesitate for a second to offer alliance with the NC as the party has formed alliance with the BJP. Now when both the PDP and the NC are targeting the BJP and give the C ngress the benefit of being so-called secular party, why don't the NC and the PDP join hands to get an absolute and even two-third majority". They also say that if both the parties failed to forge a pre-poll alliance, then it would only mean that both the parties "don't want revocation of ban on Jamaat-e-Islami"; they "don't want to remove PSA and AFSPA"; "they don't want to make certain historic amendments in the state constitution"; "they don't want power projects back"; "they don't want to amend many anti-people laws": "they don't want to release political prisoners''; "they don't want to give good and corruption-free government"; and "They don't want to avoid nepotism and restore the dignity of the people of the state"; and that it would also mean that "they don't want to take New Delhi head on". Will the NC and the PDP forge a pre-poll alliance? It's a million-Dollar question, notwithstanding the fact that the PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti has expressed her willingness to make common cause with any non-BJP political party. It's a million-Dollar question because the NC has on occasions more than one overruled the possibility of any alliance with any political party, including the Congress, for the assembly polls. |
