Baramulla people votes for change' | | | Early Times Report Baramulla, Apr 11: Defying strike call given by the separatists, people from all walks of life walked to the booths to exercise their franchise. The first phase polling was held in Baramulla constituency Thursday with some people showing excitement to cast the vote for the first. Mukhtar Ahmed, 70, a farmer seemed enthusiastic. Speaking to early Times, said he has been casting his vote since he was just 22. "I am not afraid of any extreme forces, I have voted for the betterment of people and basic enmities", he added. "I would also make a point here that past governments have been a failure. They have not done anything for the locals," he said. Without naming any political party he said that they have not done any improvement when it comes to creating employment. I have voted for betterment governance. Few kilometres away from the polling booth, a young girl who had turned 18 a few months back, while hiding his face said "I do not want to waste this opportunity of voting, which is my basic right. I told my father that I wanted to vote for my better future, and my father supported me in my decision". She added that there are educated girls like me, who need better future not just in education, but in better opportunities, a preferable environment where women's can share their voices and make their point at large extent. As she finished making her point, another woman in his mid 30's joined the conversation and said that I have come here for the betterment of my kin's. She added that they are unemployed, nothing much to do. I hope that my vote will bring a change in my life and life of those who have come here despite all the threats. Moving back to the far-flung village, a youth wished not to be named said that I want an environment, where there is no gun, no curfews and no violence. He added, " I had come here not for myself, but for my village which lacks basic amenities, and I pray that seeing me casting vote will make others cautious and they will follow me and will join my hand in better Kashmir". |
