GMC&H converts ward into OT, puts patients to risk | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 26: The Government Medical College and Hospital is doing critical surgeries in infected (temporary) Operation Theatre of Orthopedics Department in total violation of mandatory norms. The GMC&H has evoked massive ridicule for converting a sick patient ward into a temporary operation theater without following the norms. Quoting a study, an expert told Early Times that two to five percent of patients undergoing surgical procedures suffer from surgical site infections (SSIs). These infections cause significant patient morbidity and mortality and burden healthcare systems with immense costs. SSIs are the second most common cause of healthcare-associated infections and the second most common type of adverse event among hospitalized patients. He also informed that the operation theater should be hygienic and free from infection, pests and rodents. The expert also added that in the Sick patients' ward which is running without, there is no scrub station for the staff o the Operation Theater and no proper changing room for them which is a clear violation of the set norms but no one pay heed to a serious issue. Pertinently, ET had carried news regarding infected operation theater a few days ago just to highlight the wrongdoings but unfortunately, the concerned have not taken any action to improve things. |
