Break out of epidemics immenent as huge dump of trash swells on road in Shastri Nagar | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 26: Four years after the Prime Minister announced the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan with much fanfare, it is apparent that we cannot clean up the rotting trash that has become so common on our streets all over the country? Men can be seen all over the country peeing on walls or into the air. It is almost impossible to find any pavements in our towns and cities, and when there are some, they are strewn with trash and wet with urine. Simple logic tells us we need a lot more trash bins and public toilets. But that is the easier part. Keeping them clean and usable is the more difficult part. Clearly we are failing. We have a system of high cost government with low returns. We need a newer and better way of managing cleanliness. This is not a sum that we cannot afford. Will India become a cleaner, healthier and more hygienic nation, less offensive to sight and smell? I didn't think so then and now it is apparent that the Swachh Bharat campaign has so far been more of a failure than a success. Nevertheless the Prime Minister must be lauded for flagging this as a priority. But more than intentions are not everything. But our state has failed in this respect. Glaring example can be seen in posh locality of Shastri Nagar Behind temple Gym where the huge dump of trash is lying on road inviting the swine flu and snakes which are often seen in that areas and is a major threat to the local inhabitants. When asked about the same to local residents they said number of times complaints have been raised with Jammu municipality but nothing has happened so far. Even Local MLA and corporator was also approached in this respect but except assurances nothing has been achieved so far. It is pertinent to mention that local corporator lives hardly 100 mts from that dump and is in his way but has done nothing in this regard.. The condition of most public conveniences will tell you that government is not working. The Honble. Governor should turn his focus on why the government fails to deliver services in India. Only then can he make a Swachh Bharat. A clean India will automatically generate an additional 1-2% GDP growth and we can truthfully account for Public Administration as Services for national income accounting. |
