Apprehending defeat, PDP leaders lobbies for 1 lakh votes in last leg | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 4: With the defeat of Peoples Democratic Party, President, Mehbooba Mufti looking certain in the Parliament's Anantnag constituency seat, the PDP leaders are busy on a "mission" to make their voters come out to vote on May 6, which is the third and last leg of elections in the constituency. The sources said the PDP leadership has assigned the task of making voters come out to some of the senior leaders from south Kashmir, including three former lawmakers. Sources said the leadership has been told by the top brass that it was "do or die situation" for them and that if each of them is not able to make 25,000 voters each turn up for voting each, the situation would be disastrous. Sources said for the last few days some of the top PDP leaders including Mehbooba Mufti had been camping in south Kashmir only to convince their "old voters to come out and vote for the party." Sources said some of their old aides close to Jamaat -e-Islami and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front have also been approached by the party leadership to make their cadres cast vote for PDP. Sources said the PDP looks ahead to seek one lakh votes from Shopian and Pulwama districts for voting and that only then it would be possible to party to win. "If we get these many votes from Shopian and Pulwama, we will have a cakewalk," a PDP leader told Early Times on the condition of anonymity. Source said the PDP believes that voter turnout in the first leg of elections in the constituency benefitted Congress more and that the second leg largely benefitted National Conference. "Given the expected results of the first two rounds the third one is do or die for us," said a PDP leader. |
